MUSIC
Music, let alone music in the New Media, is one of the Fine Arts we have not yet written about. So, here goes…

A BRIEF HISTORY OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC
Highly selective, (and not necessarily in this order), but: wax cylinder, record, spotted dog, microphone, radio, record player, movies, TV, stereo, electric guitar, transistor, video, boom box, synthesizer, 8 track, cassette, CD,keyboard,  mp3, Napster, iPod, and now- apps.

THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC
As written by E.O. Wilson, Pellegrino University Professor emeritus at Harvard  in “On the Origins of the Arts,” Harvard Magazine, January-February 2013,

To create and perform music is a human instinct. It is one of the true universals of our species. Music is powerful in its impact on human feeling and on the interpretation of events. It is extraordinarily complex in the neural circuits it employs, appearing to elicit emotion in at least six different brain mechanisms.

DJ PHILIP GLASS
REWORK_ (Philip Glass Remixed) is an interactive tour through the amazing new REWORK_ album that remixes Philip Glass’ music. The app includes eleven interactive visualizations for the remixed songs, along with an interactive “Glass Machine” that lets you create your own music inspired by Philip Glass’ early music.

In the above video, Glass plays around with his own music using an interactive “Glass Machine” app, designed to complement the album. The app includes eleven interactive visualizations of remixed songs from the Rework album and a Glass Machine, allowing users to create their own Glass-inspired music.

The idea for the REWORK_ album came together during a conversation between Philip Glass and his friend and new collaborator Beck. The pair recruited producer Hector Castillo, David Bowie, Björk, and Lou Reed to help assemble a collection of remixes of Glass’ works by a list of critically acclaimed artists including Beck himself, Tyondai Braxton, Amon Tobin, Cornelius, Dan Deacon, Johann Johannsson, Nosaj Thing, Memory Tapes, Silver Alert, Pantha du Prince, My Great Ghost and Peter Broderick. The app was  developed by Snibbe Studio, (creator of Björk’s Biophilia app).

REWORK_ (Philip Glass Remixed) is available on iTunes for $9.95.

TUNE IN FOR MORE
In February, we will review 3 music apps, one of which allows you to draw your own specialized piece of sound hardware, like a MIDI Board, on any random piece of paper, and it works!
